DuPontTM Vamac® and Viton® have been used in automotive hoses and connectors for over 25 years. Today, we are providing higher performance for a new generation of engines and drivetrains that run hotter and use harsher fuels and lubricants.
Chosen for heat and oil resistance, several grades of DuPont™ Vamac® ethylene acrylic elastomers are available for specific applications that provide either low oil swell, high viscosity, high or low temperature, and no post-cure or for extrusion.
For emission control components and other underhood applications, Vamac® is used for heat and oil resistance in parts ranging from hoses, dampers and boots to seals and gaskets.
Extreme Heat and Chemical Resistance
Viton® has been the fluoroelastomer of choice for over 50 years. With temperature resistance up to 250°C and resistance to the most aggressive chemicals, Viton® has been used in automotive fuel system components, as well as high-performance parts in the engine and powertrain, for years.
Cost is optimized with high-performance emission hose and connectors when a Viton® veneer is used inside the component made of Vamac®, instead of using Viton® for the entire structure.
Supporting More Efficient Engines
Technology that boosts efficiency, while reducing the size of gas and diesel engines, is the main route to lower emissions and improved fuel economy. More than 65% of energy loss happens within the engine, so DuPont is focusing on heat, pressure, and chemical-resistant elastomers to make engines lighter. Vamac® and Viton® are important contributors to the equation.
From Blueprints to Compliance Tests
DuPont engine efficiency experts are working on technologies that can help automakers reach their efficiency goals sooner. Of special interest is how materials and science can reduce friction and optimize the mass-to-efficiency ratio. Light-weight materials that can stand up to heat, chemicals and pressure are key to reaching new goals and emissions standards.
Recent changes in engine technology, including turbochargers, exhaust gas recirculation loops, selective catalytic reduction, bio-fuels and high-pressure direct fuel injection, have led to new requirements for underhood components, including ducts, hoses and seals, that can tolerate more extreme chemicals. DuPont responded by developing Vamac® Ultra® and Viton® APA.
Enhanced Performance to Meet New Demands
Higher viscosity grades, known as the Vamac® Ultra® product series, provide enhanced properties that extend its thermal capabilities range as wide as -40°C to 180°C and peaks to 200°C. Vamac® Ultra® HT was developed with properties to meet the demand for higher-temperature-resistant turbocharger hoses and ducts.
Vamac® Ultra® products combine other properties with high thermal resistance. They also offer higher flex fatigue resistance, enhanced mechanical properties and better low-temperature flexibility. This next-generation material was quickly adopted by the industry for its expanded properties, including heat resistance in the presence of engine and transmission lubricants, or acids from exhaust gas recirculation and closed crankcase ventilation systems.
Viton® APA types utilize innovative cure site technology to provide excellent mechanical properties, such as tensile strength and compression set, while also delivering superior resistance to fluids such as oils, fuels, and aqueous acid condensates. Additionally, Viton® APA types provide outstanding high-temperature resistance up to 250°C. Specialty low-temperature Viton® APA types can provide sealing capability down to -40°C in some applications.
