Scientific breakthroughs have made the promise of carbon neutrality, renewability and independence from petroleum a real possibility. A renewable resource can be renewed or regenerated by natural ecological cycles or sound management practices within a short time relative to a human life span.

Some of the materials we use every day can be derived from just such sources -- renewable, non-food biomass that includes caster beans, corn, soybeans, sugar cane, wheat and other renewable sources.

But for sustainable plastics to be widely adopted, they must be comparable in performance and cost-effectiveness to other materials.

Redefining What Biopolymers Can Do

With one of the industry’s broadest biopolymers product lines, DuPont is using our long history of materials science expertise to make sustainable plastics competitive. Through DuPont innovation, key building blocks for many of the materials we use every day can now be derived from renewable resources — creating a much smaller environmental footprint than their petroleum-based predecessors with no compromise in performance.

The DuPont Sustainable Plastics Portfolio

DuPont Performance Polymers has the broadest range of renewably sourced (RS) engineering polymers available today.  We’re committed to setting clear, consistent standards. So DuPont is working with the European Bioplastics association and ASTM International to standardize industry definitions of and communications about renewably sourced materials.

DuPont RS biopolymers contain between 20% and 100% renewably sourced materials.  The product line includes RS grades of two of our most-used brands – Hytrel® RS, and Zytel® RS as well as Sorona® EP, which was created exclusively as a biopolymer.

Hytrel® RS renewably sourced thermoplastic polyester elastomer

Hytrel® RS thermoplastic elastomer provides all of the performance characteristics of traditional Hytrel®, which combines the flexibility of rubber, the strength of plastics and the processability of thermoplastics. The unique combination of properties Hytrel® provides has long been used in automobile CV joint boots, which must endure bumps, heat, cold and chemicals.  While Hytrel® RS grades are 35% to 65% renewably sourced they show the same performance and processing characteristics as traditionally sourced Hytrel®.

Zytel® RS renewably sourced nylon resin

The Zytel® RS product family provides stiffness and toughness with chemical and hydrolysis resistance. It’s part of the widely used DuPont Zytel® family, but our RS grades are made with 20% to 100% renewable content that comes from sebacic acid which is derived from castor oil, one of the most versatile, non-food competing natural products.

DuPont Sorona® Offers Versatility and High Performance

Making renewable products that can deliver high performance and design flexibility helps make sustainable practical. Consider just one of our renewably sourced materials, DuPont™ Sorona® EP. This eco-friendly plastic is comprised of 20% to 37% corn by weight, and has strength and molding characteristics that make it a natural replacement for PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) in industries from automotive to electronics to oil and gas.

Changing Materials Changes the Game

Renewable plastics are an environmental gamer-changer. Just a few years ago, the goal of carbon-neutral production seemed like a distant target.
