Increasing Performance in Automotive Components
From passenger cars and light trucks to professional racing cars, DuPont™ Kevlar® aramid fibre and DuPont™ Nomex® flame-resistant fibre help improve the safety, performance, and durability of a wide range of automotive components. Many new vehicles contain several crucial components that use DuPont products – for example power train components, body components and hoses.
Kevlar® strength to maintain shape and help increase product life:
Using knitted or braided Kevlar® fibre to reinforce radiator, transmission, and turbo charger hoses helps make them light and strong. This is because Kevlar® is not only stronger than other materials typically used in high-pressure hoses, but has excellent thermal stability and chemical resistance too.
Car and truck tyres use Kevlar® because it has excellent thermal stability and helps offer superb puncture, abrasion and tear resistance. Other benefits can include a quieter ride and a reduction in rotational weight, which can help decrease engine strain, and typically results in improved fuel efficiency.
With its high modulus and abrasion resistance, Kevlar® fibre helps auto belts retain their original shape and tension throughout the millions of revolutions they endure over the lifespan of a vehicle.
Brake pads made of Kevlar® pulp are better equipped to withstand the wear and tear that friction creates. With their enhanced thermal stability and inherent abrasion resistance, reinforced brake pads made of Kevlar® are designed for long life and safe, quiet braking.
Kevlar® is replacing fibreglass-reinforced plastic in NASCAR® racecar bodies and air dams because it helps to prevent the car body from shattering or leaving hazardous debris on the track after a crash. Kevlar® fibre is used in the HANS Device – the life-saving restraining linkage that supports the driver’s head and neck – that helps absorb impact forces that are strong enough to damage neck vertebrae.
Formula 1 cars use straps made of Kevlar® to hold onto wheels that break off during crashes, which helps prevent them from bouncing off the track and into the stands.
Thanks to its chemical and thermal stability, reinforcement made of Kevlar® pulp helps make gaskets strong and durable.
Kevlar® pulp is also effective in clutches, which are subject to severe frictional stress. Tests have shown that clutch linings with Kevlar® do not require service or replacement as often as standard clutch linings.
Kevlar® provides an effective, lightweight armor solution that helps protect against ballistic attack, allowing cars and light trucks to retain most of their original handling characteristics while stopping multiple rounds. Law enforcement agencies, cash security companies and people who live or work in hostile environments trust Kevlar® armor to help increase security in vehicles where weight is a critical factor.
Nomex® for inherent flame resistance and high-temperature applications in automotive components:
The inherent thermal resistance of DuPont™ Nomex® fibre makes it ideal for high-temperature automotive applications, including heat shields and other under-the-bonnet applications.
Sheet structures made of DuPont™Nomex® fibre are used as heat shields, as well as insulation shields for spark plug leads. Other under-the-bonnet applications include flexible, high-temperature hoses – for instance, the ones that feed hot air to inlet manifolds and the turbocharger hoses. Nomex® fibre also helps products keep engine bays from overheating, radiator hoses from bursting, and windscreen wipers from failing – even in bad weather.
