Wall Cladding Solutions in Healthcare Applications

Asian Heart Institute, known for its world-class cardiac care facility in Mumbai, needed a sterile environment with applications ranging from operation theatre cladding to wash counters.

The designers from Edifice, Mumbai were looking for versatile and hygienic solid surfaces, with an emphasis on safety and patient comfort, for applications including the wall cladding at the Asian Heart Institute. Of utmost importance was integrating the latest technological advances and ethical practices for the cardiac care facility, without compromising on modern healthcare hygiene.

DuPont™ Corian® solid surface was chosen for the complex task of employing healthcare design applications on the surface area of 11000 sq. ft to create a sterile environment. Corian® surface was an ideal material because of its unique attributes. Since Corian® is non-porous, there are no micro-cavities to harbour pathogens, and thus it inhibits bacterial growth in the wall cladding solutions, making it perfect for healthcare applications.

Corian® solid surfaces is an obvious choice for healthcare applications because of its stain resistance – dirt or body fluids cannot adhere to the exposed areas and low levels of contamination can be easily cleaned away. Independent laboratory tests indicate that DuPont™ Corian® will not promote the growth of fungi, mildew, and bacteria such as staph or other germs. Additionally, there is virtually no off-gassing from Corian® at room temperature, making it the perfect material for designers to create a hygienic environment without compromising on architectural aesthetics.
